Recently Bombay Leaks has reported how Dr Ramesh Kagzi duped thousands of patients by inflating medical bills and symphoning off lakhs of rupees from them through government policies. According to the police investigations this is not the first time that Kagzi has done such a thing. He is a habitual Offender and earlier he was caught red handed by government officials who had visited his hospital posing as patients.
According to the police, Kagzi used to dupe those patients who were covered under government insurance schemes and polices. As soon as any patient gets admitted in Balaji hospital, Kagzi used to give them the minimum treatment but with a maximum bill. Those medicines which are available in the market for a less cost are charged with a double and triple price in the bill which was being submitted to the insurance companies. These inflated bills would get passed without any hassle. The cops who are probing the matter have raised suspicion on the insurance companies as well.
“It is not possible that the insurance companies would pass the bills without any verification. Every company has a team which scrutinises these bills. Without an insiders help this fraud would not have been possible,” said an officer investigating this case.
The police are now probing the insurance companies in this matter too. They suspect the involvement of certain officials who were working hand in glove with the fraud doctor.
When the patients were taken to operation or a surgery a consent was taken from them and the bill was discussed with them accordingly. The poor and uneducated masses would not know the fraud done to them and as a result did not complain. Also the cops are investigating the role of few doctors who would bring these patients to the Balaji hospital. They would get a handsome cut in the bill depending on the number of patients they bring in.
Kagzi after his release from the jail has refused to speak to the media. He is yet to deposit the said amount of INR: 1,28,44,696/- to the court.
