Mumbai doctor asked to cough up INR: 1,28,44,696/- in favour of an interim relief and INR: 50,000 more as security deposit to Sewri sessions court. The matter goes back to year 2015 when Balaji hospital’s owner Ramesh Kagzi and a retired government official Gurunath Balapur of ESIC were accused of duping several poor patients who had availed medical facilities under the Rajiv Gandhi Yojna. There were several complaints against the accused of inflating the medical prices and looting the patients for lakhs of rupees.
According to the labour laws of the Office of the state of Maharashtra, Labour department those who have an income of
INR: 20,000/- per month are eligible for a medical policy where 1.75 % of their salary will be deducted and the ESIC will add up 4.25 % from their side and prove an insurance cover for the workers and their family members.
As this department comes under the Government of Maharashtra, a drive was conducted between year 2011 to 2012 and it was found out that more than 2500 files which specified corrupt practices were from Maharashtra alone and 196 were from Balaji hospital in Mumbai where even small medical expenses were forged into huge amounts in the name of these poor patients. According to the current figures the accused Kagzi has siphoned off INR: 1,28,84,696/- in a year alone.
Ramesh Kagzi had organised a lavish destination for the wedding of his son in Jaipur last year. The who’s who of the city were also present in the three day wedding. The three day affair had a invitee list consisting of top politicians, BMC officials,
IAS officers and doctors. It is said that Kagzi who had duped the patients in the Rajiv Gandhi Yojna had spent this money on his sons wedding.
As a result Kagzi was arrested by inspector Ramesh More and sent to jail. Sewri court observed that the accused can get out on bail if he deposits the said amount in the court and additional INR: 50,000/- to avoid the cancellation of the bail.
