After News Asia Leaks exposed how Balaji hospital have been duping several patients by pumping out huge money from government schemes more and more complaints have been coming forward with their part of the story. Earlier we reported how Dr Ramesh Kagzi was a serial offender and how he used to fudge the records and cheat insurance companies to gain profit. According to the latest updates, Kagzi’s Balaji hospital has faced the government axe for the third time. A probe was launched in year 2013 against the hospital for fudging records of nearly 50 patients under the Government scheme which was meant to provide treatment to poor patients at a nominal cost.
According to the police Kagzi used to dupe those patients who were covered under government insurance schemes and polices. As soon as any patient gets admitted in Balaji hospital Kagzi used to give them the minimum treatment but with a maximum bill. Those medicines which are available in the market for a less cost are charged with a double and triple price in the bill which was being submitted to the insurance companies. Balaji hospital was removed from the panel in 2016 but some how Kagzi using his political connections got back into the scheme. Again in 2018 after Dr. Sudhakar Shinde took over the state Mahatama Jyotiba Phule Arogya Yojana visited the 100-bed Balaji Hospital in Byculla on May 19 posing as a patient and found that six patients were asked to pay extra money. All of them were registered as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule scheme patients, but each said they had to pay extra money.
Patients with an income below Rs 1 lakh can get free treatment under the health insurance scheme. But Shinde found out during an undercover operation on May 19 that Balaji hospital inflated bills, wrongly diagnosed health conditions/diseases, and fudged medical reports as well as discharge summaries on seven occasions. This is the second time that Balaji hospital is being pulled up for defrauding patients.
After this incident a show cause notice was issued to Kagzi asking for explanation and then he was de-panelled again.
According to the police, Balaji hospital was also on the police panel but due to his fraud says it was removed from the police panel too. The investigating authorities are now trying to gather those cops too who had complained of overcharging.
“ His answers were not satisfactory and later we removed the hospital from the panel. Necessary action was taken after we found out discrepancies in the documents,” said Shinde.
Kagzi remained tight lipped on the entire matter.
